World Maritime Day Celebrations Begin in Kenya

Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) will host a live interactive webinar on the Zoom Platform on 30th September 2021, from 1000 to 1200hrs (GMT- Nairobi) to commemorate the World Maritime Day 2021 exploring the theme “Seafarers at the Core of Shipping’s future.”  The webinar which will be streamed live on the Kenya Maritime Authority You Tube channel and Face Book page will raise awareness on seafarers’ vital role in world trade, highlighting among other issues, their exceptional contribution as essential workers at the frontline in delivering vital goods amidst the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic. Other issues slated for discussion are fair treatment of seafarers, access to maritime education and training opportunities, recruitment, safe working environment for seafarers, their role on safety, maritime security and environmental protection against a backdrop of increased digitalization and automation. 

The zoom webinar will be officially launched by Nancy Karigithu, Principal Secretary, State Department of Shipping and Maritime and Robert Njue, Director General, Kenya Maritime Authority and will feature discussions by seafarers and leading actors in the maritime industry. The Authority is also hosting interactive radio breakfast shows on Pwani Fm (28th September, 2021, 0800-0900hrs GMT) and KBC national radio (29th September, 2021, 0800-0900hrs GMT) to create public awareness on seafarers and World Maritime Day thematic issues. Informative maritime documentaries will also be aired on Thursday, 30th September, 2045hrs GMT on NTV and on Friday, 1st October, 2021, 2145hrs GMT on Citizen TV. Public awareness on Print platforms can be accessed on the national papers, the Standard and Daily Nation’s front pages on 30th October, 2021.

The digital campaign for World Maritime Day 2021 has also begun on the Authority’s social media platforms; Face Book, Twitter and You Tube.
